Sod Installation

Sod is the fast way to a lawn: prepared soil, then turf laid tight so it can root. We use it for new lawns, for spots that have gone to dirt, and for the grass area next to a new patio or walk.

Prep is the job. Colorado Springs clay is hard when it is dry and sticky when it is wet. Sod set on top of that, without working the soil, dries out at the seam and never knits. We grade the area, work the soil, and set the sod so water does not sit in a dish in the middle. Our spring guide, sod installation, covers the homeowner side of that timing.

We do not publish a price per square foot. The estimate depends on access, how much soil work the yard needs, and whether irrigation is part of the same visit.

On the visit we also look at the edge. Sod that runs into a patio, a fence, or a rock bed needs a clean line or the grass creeps and the bed fills with clippings. If that edge is a new patio or wall, we plan both so the lawn is not cut back a month later.

Irrigation Installation

A new lawn without a way to water it is a short-lived lawn. We install irrigation so the grass and the beds get water on a schedule you can live with. Zones follow the yard: lawn separate from shrubs, sunny beds separate from shade, and no heads spraying the fence or the sidewalk if we can avoid it.

We plan irrigation with the landscape, not after the beds are already planted. That is easier on the plants and on the trenches. Read irrigation installation for the growing season for what to think about before we visit. If the beds are meant to use less water overall, pair this with xeriscape landscaping so the irrigated area stays small.

When a Lawn Is the Wrong Surface

Not every dead patch should be sod again. Deep shade, a hot western slope, a dog path, and a strip nobody walks on are poor lawns. We will say so. The alternatives we install are artificial turf and planted beds with rock or mulch.

Artificial turf is a surface, not a plant. It still needs a proper base, and it still needs an edge so it does not buckle. It makes sense where you want green without the water. It is a poor choice if you wanted a garden. See artificial turf for Colorado Springs yards and keeping artificial turf looking right in summer.

A planted bed is the other honest option. Drought-tolerant shrubs and mulch will outlast a lawn that failed twice. That choice is part of landscape design if the whole yard is being reworked, not just one rectangle of grass.

How a Lawn Project Goes

  1. We look at the area, the sun, the grade, and what killed the last lawn if there was one.
  2. We recommend sod, turf, or beds, and we give you a free estimate.
  3. We prep the soil or the base and install the surface.
  4. If irrigation is in the scope, we set it before or with the lawn so you are not trenching a new yard.
  5. We clean up and walk the watering with you.

Spring is the main season. Early fall can work while the soil is still warm. If you are only refreshing beds and hauling debris, that is yard cleanup, not a sod job. If the lawn is wet because the yard holds water, fix drainage before you pay for new grass.

Sod and Irrigation Questions

Do you install sod in Colorado Springs?

Yes. We install sod for new lawns and for areas where the grass has failed. We prep the soil first. Sod laid on hard, unworked clay does not root.

Do you install sprinklers?

Yes. We install irrigation with a new lawn or with new beds so water goes where the plants are. Zones are planned with the yard.

Is artificial turf an option?

Yes, where a grass lawn will not hold. Shade, slope, a dog run, or a spot you are tired of watering are the usual reasons. We will say if turf or a planted bed is the better fit.

When is the best time to lay sod here?

Spring is the main window, so the lawn can root before the hottest weeks. Early fall can also work while the ground is still warm. We will tell you if a start date is too late.

Can you do just a section of lawn?

Yes. A side yard, a strip along a new patio, or a front lawn can be its own job. If the rest should be beds, we plan that edge. Patios next to new sod are on our hardscaping page.
