Landscaping Services We Offer

One crew can cover the yard, or we can do a single piece of it. Each of these is work we already do in Colorado Springs:

Landscaping in Colorado Springs — How We Keep Landscaping Affordable

How We Keep Landscaping Affordable

Affordable landscaping starts with a clear plan, not a surprise at the end. The estimate is free. We look at the yard, tell you what we recommend, and you decide what to do now.

A lot of yards do not need to be finished in one visit. We phase projects so you can do the yard in stages: drainage and grading first, then a patio or wall, then planting when you are ready. That keeps a bigger yard doable without cutting corners on the part we build.

Plant choice matters as much as the install. Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plants cost less to water and less to keep up than a yard that needs constant replacement. Where grass is costly to keep, rock and mulch beds often make more sense than another strip of lawn. And because one crew handles the landscaping, the drainage, the fence, and the deck or pergola, you are not hiring a new company for every piece of the same yard.

Landscape Design

Every family uses a yard differently. Some want a place to sit. Some want vegetables, a play area, or a tree that will shade the house in a few years. We design for that, not for a catalog photo.

On a design visit we look at where the sun hits, where water runs, and how steep the lot is. Colorado Springs yards often need the plan to deal with clay soil and a short list of plants that actually live here. We can lay out beds that are easy to walk, set a spot for a future deck or pergola, and leave room to add the rest later.

You do not need a separate designer. We plan it and we build it. Read more on our landscape design page, or see designing outdoor spaces that work year round in Colorado Springs.

Backyard Landscaping

Backyard landscaping in Colorado Springs is usually about making the private side of the house usable. A lot of backyards we see are a slope, a wet corner, and a patch of grass that never quite works. The useful version has a flat place to sit, planting that can live with the sun and the wind, and water that moves away from the house.

A patio is often the first piece. We build seating areas in pavers and flagstone, sized to how you actually use the yard. Shade can come from a tree, a pergola, or both. If you want the neighbors out of the view, a fence along the property line does that job while the beds go in along it.

Wet backyards need grading or a drain before the pretty work. Clay soil holds water, and a patio laid on a low spot will sit in it. We tie backyard landscaping to our drainage work when the yard needs it, so the new beds and the new patio are not fighting the same puddle next summer.

Planting in a backyard should be something you can live with. We use low-maintenance lawn alternatives where a full sod lawn would be more work than it is worth, and we keep a grass area where kids or a dog need it. Rock and mulch fill the rest. If the backyard is the only part you want done, that is a complete project. We do not require a front yard to match.

Front Yard Landscaping and Curb Appeal

The front yard is what you and your neighbors see every day. Front yard landscaping in Colorado Springs is often a tired lawn, overgrown shrubs against the foundation, and beds that have gone to weeds. We clean that up and rebuild it so the house reads clearly from the street.

Typical front yard work is a simpler plant list, a walk that actually leads to the door, and beds of rock or mulch that do not need weekly watering. Hardscaping belongs here too: a short wall, a widened entry, or stone that holds a slope off the sidewalk. Our guide to front yard hardscaping ideas covers the kinds of changes that show up from the curb, and curb appeal upgrades that stand up to Colorado weather is worth a look before you pick plants.

We can do the front yard by itself. A lot of homeowners start there, then come back for the backyard once they see how the street side looks.

Retaining Walls, Hardscaping and Patios

A flat drawing of a landscape does not survive a Colorado Springs lot. Slopes need a retaining wall so soil stays where you put it. Patios, walks, and borders are the hardscape that gives the yard a floor you can use in mud season and in August.

We build retaining walls, paver and flagstone patios, and the edging that keeps rock and mulch in the bed. Freeze-thaw is the thing that breaks this work if the base is wrong. Our notes on choosing a retaining wall, paver and flagstone patios, and protecting hardscapes from freeze-thaw go into the choices we talk through at the estimate.

Xeriscape and Drought-Tolerant Landscaping

Xeriscape is not a yard of gravel and one cactus. It is a landscape planned so the plants, the mulch, and the irrigation all use less water. In Colorado Springs that usually means drought-tolerant shrubs and perennials, rock or mulch instead of bare soil, and lawn only where you will actually use it.

We check the soil before we plant. Healthy soil holds the water you do apply, so you are not pouring it through a bed that cannot keep it. We can also fold hardscape into a xeriscape so the yard still has a place to walk and sit. Start with our xeriscape and drought-tolerant landscaping page, then the plant lists in drought-tolerant plants for Colorado Springs gardens and drought-resistant landscaping.

Sod, Irrigation and Lawn Alternatives

Some yards need a real lawn. We install sod where grass is the right surface, and we can add irrigation so that lawn has a chance in a dry summer. Where grass fails every year, artificial turf or a planted bed is often the more honest fix.

We will say so at the estimate if a lawn is going to fight the slope, the shade, or the water bill. Details live on our sod, irrigation, and lawn installation page, and in these guides: sod installation, irrigation installation, and artificial turf for Colorado Springs yards.

Rock and Mulch Beds

Rock and mulch are how a lot of Colorado Springs beds stay neat between waterings. Mulch holds moisture and breaks down into the soil. Rock stays put in wind, handles foot traffic better, and does not need to be refreshed as often. Neither one is automatically better. It depends on the bed, the plants, and whether you are covering a slope.

We install both, and we can refresh beds that have thinned out. Read rock versus mulch and our gravel garden upkeep notes. If you want material for a project of your own, browse landscape rock, breeze, and mulch.

Landscaping for Colorado Springs Conditions

A plant list from a wetter climate will not hold up here. We plan for the conditions we see on local jobs:

  • Clay soil. It holds water, then bakes hard. Beds and lawns need soil worked before planting, and slopes often need a wall or a grade change so water does not sit.
  • Altitude and sun. The sun is strong, and a south or west exposure will cook thin plantings. We place shade and choose plants that can take it.
  • Freeze-thaw. Walls, patios, and walks move if the base and the drainage under them are wrong. We build for that cycle.
  • Hail and wind. Exposed yards lose young plants and loose mulch. We set plant locations and bed cover with that in mind.
  • Water limits. Yards here do better when the thirsty area is small. Drought-tolerant planting and rock or mulch beds are how we keep a yard looking finished without asking it to stay bright green all summer.

We keep the plan practical. Local rules on water and on structures vary, and we go over anything that applies to your property when we are there for the estimate.

How a Landscaping Project Works

  1. Free estimate visit. We walk the yard, listen to what you want, and note slope, sun, and drainage.
  2. Design and plan. We lay out the work, including what can wait for a later phase.
  3. Schedule. We set a start based on the season and the size of the job.
  4. Install. Walls, patios, grading, irrigation, and planting go in as the plan calls for.
  5. Cleanup. We clear the work area before we leave.
  6. Walkthrough. We walk the finished yard with you so you know what was done and how to look after it.

When to Start a Landscaping Project

Spring is planting season. The ground is open, and new shrubs, sod, and perennials have time to root before the heat. If you want beds and a lawn in place for summer, this is the window.

Fall is a good time for the structural work: retaining walls, patios, grading, and bed prep. The weather is easier on a crew, and the yard is ready for spring planting. See fall landscaping projects and why November is a smart month to plan.

Winter is for planning. We can meet, measure, and design while the ground is frozen so your project is ready when the season opens. Planning outdoor projects in winter and winter landscaping consultations cover how homeowners use those months.

Landscaping Service Pages

One Crew for the Whole Yard

Landscaping rarely sits by itself. The same visit that designs the beds often finds a drainage problem, a fence that needs repair, or a spot that wants a deck. We would rather do that as one project than send you to three other companies.

Yes. We install drought-tolerant plants suited to the Colorado Springs climate, which use less water than most landscape plants, and we check soil health before planting.

Do you build retaining walls and hardscaping?

Yes. Retaining walls, hardscaping, patios, and rock and mulch beds are a regular part of our landscaping work. We also sell landscape rock and gravel through our products page.

Can you combine landscaping with a yard cleanup or a new deck?

Yes. Many customers pair landscaping with a seasonal yard cleanup, drainage, a fence, or a new deck or pergola, so the whole yard is done by one crew.

How long has Affordable Services been in business?

We have served Colorado Springs since 1996. We are family owned and operated, and our crew is fully insured.

Do you offer affordable or budget landscaping?

Yes. Every job starts with a free estimate, and we can phase the work so you do the yard in stages. We also lean on low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plants, and on rock and mulch where grass is costly to keep. We do not publish prices, because every yard is different.

Can you do just my backyard or just my front yard?

Yes. A lot of our work is one side of the house: a backyard patio and planting, or a front yard cleanup and new beds. Tell us which area you want done and we will plan around that.

Do you design the landscape or do I need a separate designer?

We design and install. On the free estimate visit we look at sun, slope, drainage, and how you use the yard, then we put a plan together with you. You do not need a separate designer. See landscape design in Colorado Springs.

What is xeriscaping and is it right for my yard?

Xeriscaping is landscaping planned to use less water: the right plants, mulch or rock, and watering only where it helps. It fits a lot of Colorado Springs yards, especially sunny slopes and beds that are hard to keep green. We can mix it with a small lawn if you still want grass.

When is the best time to landscape in Colorado Springs?

Spring is the main planting season. Fall is a strong time for walls, patios, grading, and getting beds ready. Winter is when many homeowners plan the project so it is ready to start when the ground opens up.

Do you install sod and sprinklers?

Yes. We install sod and lawn areas, irrigation, and artificial turf where a traditional lawn is hard to keep. We will tell you at the estimate which option fits the yard. More is on our sod and irrigation page.
